The 7 Laws of Virality

cardflick:

What makes something viral? Why do people want to share something? So we took some time and thought out what virality really means. We’ll take a look at some of our favorite services and see how they stack up on each law. It’s also helpful for us to see where we can improve CardFlick.

Why $1 Billion Is A Good Price For Instagram
Just look at the CPU (Cost per user):
“Instagram has 35 million users. When Yahoo bought Geocities, it had just more than 4 million. Instagram cost Facebook somewhere around $30 per user. Geocities cost Yahoo a stunning $830 per user.”
Though $1 billion might sound pretty crazy, it’s only 1% of Facebook’s market cap. Thwarting future competition while simultaneously absorbing new/better technology, for a relatively cheap price tag. Well played, Facebook.

Pornography and Men’s Responsibility

What was reflected on the convention floor was not just a truth about pornography, but a truth about gender and sex and power in contemporary culture, as well as a truth about the brutality of capitalism. At the end of that day, I was more aware than ever that the feminist critique of pornography is not simply a critique of pornography but about the routine way we are trained to be sexual, about the eroticization of domination and subordination. Feminism, as I learned it, is a full-bore attack on systems of illegitimate authority, of which male dominance is one, along with white supremacy, capitalism, and imperialism.
